Chiller / Liquid Cooling

Chiller / Liquid Cooling

The need to cool liquid media is a primary requirement of many industrial processes. In diverse applications such as food packaging, machine tools, industrial drives, data centres and control systems, the control of the liquid media within an acceptable temperature range is critical to successful operation.
Seifert Systems provides liquid cooling products up to 160 kW cooling capacity which are designed to individual requirements. By integrating various needs and different parts of a system, our range of chillers will provide the best solution for any application.

Liquid Media
The type of media to be cooled has a major influence on the type of chiller that can be used. Most processes use water- or oil-based fluids. Cooling of other fluids is also possible.

  • Water / glycol mixtures: Typical applications are the cooling of spindles in

machine tools and cooling of electrical enclosures with air-water heat exchangers.  Water / glycol mixtures can transport heat efficiently and do not require special materials.

  • Deionized water: Typical applications are the direct cooling of components in a variable frequency drive and server racks data centres.  Deionized water, being non-conductive, is often used where electrical components need to be directly cooled by a liquid.  Since it is highly corrosive, components in contact with the media must be suitably resistant to corrosion e.g. stainless steel.  Chillers for deionized water can also include a purification circuit to constantly maintain water quality at the required level.

  • Water-based emulsions: A typical application is the cooling of coolant in a milling or grinding machine.  When the emulsion is clean, the chiller can be installed separately from the machine.  Alternatively, the chiller can be installed directly on the filtration unit with the cooling coils immersed in the coolant tank.  The heat capacity of such emulsions is slightly lower than that of water / glycol system.

  • Oil-based media: Typical applications include the cooling of hydraulic and cutting oils in machines.  Oil has a relatively low heat capacity and therefore chillers need to be larger. Pump selection must also consider the viscosity and density of the medium.

Active or Passive Cooling?

When selecting the suitable type of chiller for an application, a main consideration is the desired coolant temperature.  With an active cooling unit, the temperature of the media can be below that of the air or liquid being used to cool the system.  Active systems use a refrigeration circuit to produce the desired cooling effect.
Passive cooling units do not include a refrigeration circuit and the temperature of the media will follow the air or liquid that is used to cool the system.
